Women in Technology Society

Connecting women at Western with the technology industry

"If you want women and minorities to succeed all the way at the end of the funnel in a tech job, you have to increase the numbers starting at the top of the funnel, at the earliest age, and then make sure they stay in the funnel and get all the way through."

Jeremy Stoppelman, CEO of Yelp

Our Mission

Thirty years ago, over 37% of Computer Science degrees were awarded to women. Today, that number has dropped to 18%. This decline is reflected in the technology workforce, where only one in five software developers are women. Even though teenage girls use computers and the Internet at rates similar to their male peers, girls are five times less likely to consider a tech-related career.

At WiTS, we believe that encouraging women to pursue technological fields of study is not only valuable, but necessary. We aim to create a supportive community for female students at Western who are studying or interested in Computer Science and Software Engineering.

Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo
